‘Running to Yesterday’ – longing for love and desire

Zing Muse – Hoang Thai Thanh Theater (HCMC) has just released the play Running to Yesterday (author Chau Bich Thuy, director Cong Hien) as a slice of life of modern young people, anxiously on the journey to find love and realize their own dreams.

The story opens with the dreamlike wedding of singer Tu Quynh (Thuy Diem) and doctor Minh (Trinh Xuan Nhan). Quynh decides to leave the stage, to devote herself to her husband who loves her very much. But that seemingly perfect happiness soon has cracks… Loneliness pushes Quynh to find sweet memories with her ex-lover, the talented musician Thanh Phuong (Ma Ran Do). The conflict reaches its peak when there are rumors about the relationship between doctor Minh and his colleague Phu Dung (NSUT Kim Tuyen)…

The play raises a burning question in today’s society: Are people coming together based on considerations of benefits and needs, forgetting that the foundation of love must be sincere vibrations from the heart? Then, when they realize their mistakes, they become alone in their own choices, having to pay the price with pain and endless regret, hurting others and themselves.

In the role of director and editor, Cong Hien shows meticulousness in every detail. He uses stage lighting as a personal language, smoothly transitioning between the real space and the flow of the character’s memories. Although only playing supporting roles, Meritorious Artist Thanh Hoi and artist Ai Nhu still prove their class with their “calm” yet graceful dialogue, bringing subtle laughter to help balance the emotions of the play. Thuy Diem and Kim Tuyen, who are familiar with the screen, when they entered the stage, showed remarkable efforts and dedication in their authentic acting. Other artists such as Hoai Nguyen, Phi Long, Ba Phong, Hoang Uyen, Anh Sao… created an emotional play, leaving many thoughts for the audience.
