Bruce Willis’ Wife Opens Up About His Dementia Battle and Family’s Journey
Emma Heming Willis has opened up about her husband, legendary actor Bruce Willis, and his ongoing battle with frontotemporal dementia, revealing both heartbreaking and inspiring details about their family life.
In an exclusive interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC (August 27), Emma, 47, shared that while Bruce remains physically strong, his mind is deteriorating. “He is gradually losing his language skills, and our family has had to learn how to adapt. We have our own way of communicating with him,” she explained.
“Connection Matters More Than Memory”
Emma said that Willis, 70, still recognizes her presence, often showing joy when she is by his side. The “Die Hard” star also maintains loving bonds with his five daughters — two young girls with Emma and three from his marriage to Demi Moore. “When people hug him, Bruce responds and enjoys it. For me, that is enough. I just need to feel that we still have a connection,” she added.
Signs of Decline
Emma recalled the first signs of trouble: personality changes, distance from loved ones, and struggles on set, including forgotten lines and confusion. In March 2022, Willis retired after being diagnosed with aphasia. A year later, doctors confirmed he suffers from frontotemporal dementia (FTD) — a condition that alters behavior and personality, with no known cure.
Tough Family Choices
Facing the reality of her husband’s condition, Emma had to make difficult decisions, including explaining the illness to their daughters Mabel (13) and Evelyn (11). Noise and chaos made Willis agitated, so family gatherings were limited. Eventually, the family moved him to a quieter, safer home with 24/7 professional caregivers, while Emma still shares meals with him daily.
“Letting him live separately was one of the hardest decisions of my life,” Emma admitted. “But I believe he would want our children to live in a home where their needs come first.”
Finding Strength Through Caregiving
At first, Emma thought she had to handle everything alone. But after Willis’ daughter Scout told her she was more worried about Emma than about Bruce, she realized she needed help. She later sought treatment for depression and built a strong caregiving support system.
Her journey has inspired her upcoming memoir, “The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path” (September release), which aims to support other families coping with dementia.
